State Sex
Offender Registry Web Site
|
In 2007, the Wyoming Legislature made substantial changes to the laws
regarding sex crimes and sex offenders. These laws are effective July 1,
2007. Wyoming law requires certain persons who have been convicted of
certain sex crimes to register with government authorities and keep that
registration information current, including their residence address. The
State’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is required by law to make
sex offender registration information available to the public by maintaining
a database called the sex offender registry.
W.S. 7-19-303(h) states:
(h) An educational institution in this state shall instruct members of its campus community, by direct advisement, publication or other means, that a member can obtain information regarding offenders employed by or attending school at the institution by contacting the campus police department or other law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over the institution. For the purposes of this subsection, "member of the campus community" means a person employed by or attending school at the educational institution at which the offender is employed or attending school, or a person's parent or guardian if the person is a minor.
To comply with this law, UW will maintain on the UW Police Department’s
website a link to the state’s sex offender registry so that all members of
the University community can review the database in its entirety. As of July
9, 2007, DCI advises that it will be several weeks before they will be able
to provide educational institutions notice of whether a new registrant on
the database is an employee or student at an educational institution. When
that capability is available, UW will modify this website accordingly.
Pending the development of that capability, and since UW student population
both at the Laramie campus and through Outreach programs is constantly
changing, members of the campus community should use the sex offender
registry’s search capabilities to review information regarding offenders
listed on the registry.
In addition, UWPD keeps a file available to the public at anytime which
lists any known registered offenders that are students faculty or staff.
This file is available 24/7 at UWPD.
