Nutrition Overview

Everyday your body requires a certain amount of energy from food in the form of carbohydrates, protein and fat.   These nutrients are necessary in order for your body to function properly.  There is not a single food that provides all the nutrients your body needs therefore eating a variety of foods ensures that you get all the necessary nutrients.

Fad Diets

Here is a quick overview of poplar diets available with their premises, main backers, and what scientific evidence shows.  A diet should help you decide what and how much to eat, a permanent life style change not a quick fix.

Trans Fat

What are trans fats?  Trans fats are created by manufacturers by adding hydrogen to vegetable oils to make the oils more solid or into a more stable form.  By adding hydrogen it not only makes it more solid it also makes the fat less “greasy” tasting. This process is called hydrogenation.  Trans fats also occur naturally in low amounts in some foods.

Avoiding the Freshman 15

Along with friends, social events, and fun, college life can bring many changes that can cause stress. The “Freshman 15” may be one concern as you head off to college. You may be making your own food choices for the first time. Add all-you-can-eat meals, and it can be the perfect recipe for weight gain.

Dietary Supplements

Approximately 40 percent of Americans take supplements. An even higher percentage of athletes take them. Among the nation's top female runners, 91 percent reported taking supplements on a regular basis.  Advertisements have convinced many people that they need to supplement their diets.  Is this true or are there hidden dangers American's should be aware of?

Eating Disorders

The pressure to be thin is a growing concern for college students, especially for young women. The desires to develop or maintain an extremely slender physique has driven some women and men to follow unhealthy eating regimens and develop finicky eating habits. Pressure to have a specific body image, however, is not only limited to thinness; individuals also experience a pressure to maintain a "big and buff" physique. Be aware of the risks of unhealthy eating patterns that may arise if you allow the desire to be unrealistically thin to consume you.
